Today, I was at the Bixby Memorial Library in Vergennes doing what I like the most: searching newspapers. And for the first time I worked with the real thing. No microfilms, no images. Real newspapers from 1871 to 1896.

This Tuesday, I visited three repositories: the Vermont State Archives in Middlesex, the Leahy Library of the Vermont Historical Society in Barre, and the Vermont Genealogy Library in Colchester.

Louis Troville went over from Grand Isle to Plattsburgh, NY, with a horse and sleigh the Friday afternoon before last, carrying over George Bean and daughter and mother. Saturday morning he started from Cumberland Head on the return trip, but when he had reached within a quarter of mile of the island he found the ice in such a condition that he was compelled to turn back, leave his horse on the New York shore, and come home on foot.
