French Canadians Living in Ferrisburgh, VT in 1850: #2 Joseph Garrow Sr

vermont 2016

Joseph Garrow is listed in the 1850 US Census for Ferrisburgh. He is referred to as Joseph Gorrow, on Page 306 (stamped), Line 22, Household 191 with the following persons listed respectively on lines 23 to 29:

  • Sophrona Gorrow
  • Joseph Gorrow
  • Sophrona Gorrow
  • Madein Gorrow
  • Solomon Gorrow
  • Roselia Gorrow
  • Adephus Gorrow

Sophrona is his wife Sophronia Johnson (Janson) and the others are his children, Joseph, Sophronia, Mary, Solomon, Rosella and Adolphus. The information about their age and place of birth is accurate except for daughter Sophronia. She is mentioned as being born in Keeseville, New York in multiple documents. All the other children’s baptismal acts, who indicated being born in Canada, have been found in Quebec records, except for Sophronia, so she might be effectively born in the United States.

Life Before Ferrisburgh:Joseph Garrow indicated in the 1900 US Census that he immigrated to the States in 1847 which makes sense since the next child was baptized in Burlington. Joseph and his wife, Sophronia, married in Saint-Athanase-de-Bleury and were living in Marieville and Saint-Grégoire-le-Grand where three of their first four children were baptized. He was a farm laborer. He might have lived shortly in Clinton County, NY as his daughter Sophronia indicated being born in Keeseville, NY.
Life After Ferrisburgh:Joseph seems to have left Ferrisburgh during the 1860's to settle in Essex, a town about 25 miles north of Ferrisburgh. He was a farm laborer. He died from gangrene in Essex and was buried besides his wife in Mountain View Cemetery in same town.
Notes:Information was taken from the 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880 and 1900 US Census, Find-a-Grave Website, Vermont Vital Records for the town of Essex, Collection Drouin (Quebec parish records), Fichier Origine and NARA naturalization index cards.
