The Bangle Files: #3 | The Children of Marie Tourville and William Bangle

BANQGenealogy typically is a work-in-progress, so discoveries made during my Salt Lake City research trip mean that transcriptions need to be done.

Before we find out the reason why Adam Bangle ended up in Terrebonne, let me first introduce to you the initial subjects of my research, Marie Tourville and William Bangle.

My goal is to identify all of Mathieu Hubou’s descendants who went by the name of Tourville (women included of course). Now and then though I come across a few people whose filiation is not corroborated by a marriage act; Marie and William are a case in point.

At first, I had only located a few baptismal records in the Saint-Louis-de-France Parish in Terrebonne. Thanks to the PRDH at the time, I was able to discover that there were other children baptized in nearby parishes. All those records dated after 1800 were found through parish repertoires. A few years ago, I was able to confirm and catch other baptismal records with the help of one of my favorite Websites, Généalogie Québec.

If some of your ancestors are French-Canadian, this Website is a must. What I appreciate the most about it is that all baptismal, marriage and burial acts are indexed through 1850. And when I say indexed, I mean properly indexed. They have started working on the 1850-1860 era so depending on the parish you are interested in, you may spot later records for your ancestors. The very best thing about Généalogie Québec though is that it allows you to do your research by using the name of the parents and thereby obtain a list of all their children. The surnames were misspelled? No problem. Just play with the dates and search only with the first name of one the parents. In our case, as William was also called Guillaume, I therefore searched both instances.

Please note that the burials have been indicated only when the children died at a young age. All the marriage and burial records of the children have been deliberately omitted as each of them will be featured in later posts.

What a nice timeline we now get of that couple! Thanks to just of few acts, we may now determine where they lived during the course of more than 20 years.

I was very lucky to find Adam Bangle’s will considering neither of Bangle family members are godparents of any of the children. Afterwards, I was able to identify the parents of William but I still have to establish who the parents of Marie Hubou-Tourville are.

Marie died in 1853 at age 74. There is one person in my tree whose family was living in Terrebonne who fits her “description”: Marie-Louise, who was baptized on October 7, 1778, daughter of Charles Tourville and Marguerite Dufour. I already note familiar names in Marie’s children’s godparents: brother Charles Hubou, sister-in-law Marie-Amable Charpentier and sister Charlotte. Henri Duprat and Marie Pauzé are the spouses of Marie’s niece and nephew. Have you noticed that Noël Roussil, who is a godfather to first-born William, was the witness on Adam’s will?

Thanks to this new information, we now have this tree:

arbre williamIn two weeks, I will present to you Catherine Bangle and Jacob Schmidt’s family.
