My 2019 French ChallengeAZ in 100 Words—or More | I for Isle Saint Jean

I have always been mixed up with Isle Saint Jean. Where was it? What is it called nowadays? Well, you have to admit, with Saint John in New Brunswick, and Saint John’s in Newfoundland, no wonder I was loosing my mind.

Since I have worked on my Fouquet-Poitevin line, Isle Saint-Jean is no longer a mystery to me since it is today’s province of Prince Edward Island.

I have visited Prince Edward Island more than 15 years ago, not long after the Confederation Bridge was inaugurated. I was staying in Cavendish—remember Anne of Green Gables? That’s the place! I also visited the capital, Charlottetown. I was there for a week, and what I remember the most is that I caught the flu while I was there and that I was sick as a dog for several days.

Jacques-Nicolas Bellin. Isle Saint Jean, 1744.

Looking at the map today, I realize that I was only a one-hour drive from Saint Peter’s Harbour where the Fouquets were living before they were deported.

Another ancestor trip in the future?
