#ChallengeAZ 2015: F for Fiancé

fiancailles - Version 2Aren’t my parents looking lovely on this picture? René and Hélène got engaged on Christmas Day of 1955. Thanks to an 8mm amateur home movie we are able to follow them as they go from one family party to another. First, at my mother’s house, then at Annette’s, my mother’s older sister, and then, at my father’s house. The elegant bright red dress my mother was wearing leads me to believe that this picture must have been taken on New Year’s Day, when they traditionally exchanged gifts. Another question I would have loved and should have asked my mother about.

#ChallengeAZ 2015: E for Education

helene classeThis picture taken in 1945 at Marguerite-Bourgeoys School in Montreal also tells us a little bit about the history of education in Québec. Do you see how few girls are there on that picture? Only twelve. My mother told us that it was the first time that year that girls were able to attend the 12th grade. She was very proud of it. I cheat a little though, posting a second document also found in my mother’s papers mentioning the names of students appearing on that photo. Who knows, maybe you will recognize the name of a grandmother, mother or aunt?

#ChallengeAZ 2015: D for Diploma

diplome“So, in the end, no matter what I do, I’ll never get a diploma from you!”. These last years, when my mother got angry because we criticized too much the way she was doing certain things and that she did not agree with us, she summarized it with that sentence. Do I need to tell you that when I found among her papers her high school diploma that she got in 1945 I could not help thinking that we should hang the precious document on the wall? Yes, Mom, you got your diploma. That one and so many others 😉

#ChallengeAZ 2015: C for Hair Care

helene grands jardins“Is my hair OK?”. How many times have I heard those words come out of my mother’s mouth? As soon as a camera was ready to immortalize her, I could have bet a fortune that we would hear that question. Coming out of the subway station, should it rain, in a blink of an eye, she would take out a plastic cap from her purse and would say: “Oh! My God, my hair!”. So you can imagine why she never understood why my sister and I loved this picture so much. Have you seen her smile? You look lovely, Mom!

#ChallengeAZ 2015: B for Buick

One of my favorite pictures! Often I wrote about my mother loving to tell about her trips her family made when she was just a child. Well, let me tell you that the 1931 Buick will be a lifelong memory for me. I was quite touched when I found in my mother’s papers an old newspaper clip of La Presse, dated 1998, praising the 1931 Buick model. That famous Chicago trip for the 1934 Century of Progress Exposition was certainly not the last one made in that car. They are so funny with their sunglasses, looking like Al Capone’s gangsters!

#ChallengeAZ 2015: A for Animal

copainAs far as I can remember, my mother was scared, disdainful even of animals. On a Saturday of October 1978, I still don’t know how, my father and I have succeeded in convincing her to adopt a dog. My sister had one for a few days then and my brother was always hanging there, so we wanted to surprise him with a dog. I promised my mother that the dog would sleep in the basement (never went there by the way). His name, Copain, was chosen by my mother. He even slept with them at the foot of their bed!

French #ChallengeAZ 2015: Many Thanks To…

soeurs 2The French ChallengeAZ will begin in a few hours. Writing, translation and planning for the first two weeks posts have been completed. During next week-end will be done the posts for the last two weeks.

My favorite post is the one on the letter G. This is the first I have written, without even seeing the photo because I remembered it very well.

I would be lying if I said that this Challenge has been done all by myself. I have written all the articles but my big sister had the honor of reading them first, correcting them, translating some of them, reminding me of some events, and making me laugh and cry.

Thanks to her support and help, I was able to go on despite my busy schedule and minor health problems.

I can’t wait for my family to read my posts. I hope they enjoy going down memory lane and that they will learn something new about Hélène, their grandmother, mother-in-law or aunt. And I hope that all the others will enjoy them as well 😉

Danielle, you told me: “It’s kinda fun that we’re doing this project together!”

My answer: “I hope it’s not the last time. Love you sis.”

French Challenge A-Z 2015 : Ready for the June Genealogy Marathon

helene foulardOnce again this year, French genealogist Sophie Boudarel invites us to take part to the A to Z Challenge.  This will be my very first participation and I am so excited, especially since almost all my articles are ready! Not only will my project become reality, but I will have plenty of time to read other bloggers’ posts.

In a few days, it will be one year since my mother passed away.  But I don’t want to be sad.

Last year, I had in mind to take part to the challenge.  I had even chosen my subject:  it would have been inspired from my mother’s photo albums.  I had promised her to see that all published posts regarding her family members would be printed.  She was delighted about it.  It is easily understandable why this project fell through.

Most of the articles already published on Genealogy On My Mind do not only relate to my own ancestors but concern some of Hubou-Tourville family’s descendants as well.  I hope you won’t hold it against me for being selfish for once wanting to spend the month of June with my mom who, you will have guessed it by now, will be the topic of my A to Z Challenge.  Her pictures tell so much about her and I will gladly try to comment each of them in less than 100 words, as suggested by Sophie!

Each of you is invited to join me because most of all, you will read about family, history, vacations, travels, love and friendship.  In short, a month of June the way I like them.  That’s it for now and I hope you will enjoy the reading as much as I will enjoy reading other participants’ posts!
