40 Days | Day 7 | Goodbye, St. Louis and Hello, Springfield!

IMG_6019 2I could tell you that Day 6 was a leisurely one with visits to the Gateway Arch, the Old Courthouse and the Old Cathedral but a genealogist can’t stay away too long from a repository. So after all that walking, in the afternoon, I went to the St. Louis County Public Library where there is an entire floor dedicated to genealogy with enthusiastic and helpful staff. I was working on people living in Cahokia, Illinois and Ste. Genevieve, Missouri (what a coincidence!). Liz Loveland, who was there as well, made quite a fabulous find herself.

As soon as I arrived in Springfield this afternoon, I headed for the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library to peruse some newspapers for Jersey County. For years, I have been looking for the obituary of Ellen Tourville Burley who supposedly died in January 1875 from a horse accident. I finally found it!

My good friend Diane is flying in tomorrow to attend the FGS conference also, I cannot wait to catch up with her!

A few pictures of St. Louis as a bonus. I really liked my stay there, I will definitely have to return!

  1. Diane, I really enjoyed the perspective of the photographs. The last one, the amazing church with the hardwood floors. What/where is that?

    • Thank you Janice! 🙂 The Church is Catholic St. Louis Old Cathedral, parish founded in 1770 but this church building was completed in 1834.

  2. Love your photographs. My Bangle ancestors walked those streets also. Joseph and Theodate Bangle lived in Missouri for a time. One of their sons and quite a few grandchildren lived in Missouri.

    • It’s funny because at one point I did remember that Joseph Bangle probably died in Missouri, right?
