French Canadians Living in Ferrisburgh, VT in 1850: #4 Catherine LaCount

vermont 2016

Catherine LaCount (Hébert dit Lecompte) is listed in the 1850 US Census for Ferrisburgh. She is referred to as Cathrine Laurow on Page 299 (stamped), Line 35, Household 97, with the following persons listed respectively on line 34 for her husband Peter and lines 36 to 38 for her children:

  • Peter Laurow
  • Anthony Laurow
  • Fransis Laurow
  • Helen Laurow

Peter is Catherine’s husband, Peter Larrow (or Jean-Baptiste Lareau), and the others are their children, all born in Vermont, Anthony, Francis and Ellen.

Catherine came to Ferrisburgh with her parents, Antoine LaCount and Catherine Tourville. She is the niece of Charles Tourville and Sophie Arpajou. I learned about her existence by pure chance. All the children of Antoine and Catherine died in infancy except for two boys. And when I “found” her, I realized that Catherine was the only one for whom I didn’t have a death date. Those one-place studies sure make you discover great things!

Note: Cathy Meder-Dempsey indicated that the “S” in Sunrow that I read when transcribing was in fact an “L” for Laurow. She was right! Correction made Jan. 23, 2016 – DT
